Seasons
Having lived in the midwest my entire life, the changing seasons have always been a part of my life. I'm not sure how I'd define a year if I lived in a climate of no season changes.
As I am in the middle of my 50-something years, I am so aware of the changing seasons in my life, as well.
When our daughters were small, my husband and I "dreaded" the day when their pre-school years would be over...we loved the years of them padding around the house in their swimsuits or their footed flannel pajamas. At that time, my sister-in-law told us, "There's something special about every age your children will go through." And, oh my, was she right.
Yes, we enjoyed the years of slumber parties and little girls softball games, the years of competive sports and scholar bowls and other academic activities, proms, and family vacations through all of those years. (My husband will be quick to remind me that these years were not without their frustrations...namely those teenage years:) And then the college years were highlights as we supported the girls in all their activities from afar.
Right now we have just finished our Thanksgiving celebrations with our two adult daughters and their "guys" (one husband and one fiance'). And now I think this might be the best season of all...to enjoy their friendships as adults, to respect and appreciate the people they have become, to see the God-given gifts they are using in their lives and the kindred spirits they share with their spouses.
We have prayed since they were small girls for their future spouses, and the Lord has brought into their lives (and ours) two of the most terrific men. (And we are blessed that both of their families are now our friends, as well, as we share our children for the rest of our lives.)
The men that have joined our family add a new season to our lives...a season that is just beginning to sprout and grow.
My sister-in-law was right, there is something great about every season of family life.
